Lentil is cultivated on approximately 25,000 acre of land which is 70% of total lentil cultivated land of Pakistan. In recent past years, there is an increase in the price of lentil. Therefore, cultivators can enhance their income by adopting latest production technology in order to increase per acre production rate. Moreover, they can also help government by lessening the expense which is spent on importing lentil. A decrease in the production rate of lentil has been noticed. Untimely and excessive rains and excess of herbs have damaged this crop very much. Moreover, because of no adoption of approved types and production related actions, there is a decrease in production ratio. In the year 2015-16, the area for lentil decreased with the major reason that the farmers could not earned enough profit from the lentil crop so they shifted their fields to wheat. However this insufficiency of production can be lessened by acting upon the recommendations of the concerned department. For this purpose, the government of Punjab is trying its best to exercise every possible resources for enhancing the production rate. Lentil crop is mostly cultivated in the areas of Narowal, Sialkot, Chakwal, Rawalpindi and Gujrat. Moreover, it is also cultivated in Dera Ghazi Khan, Layyah, Jhang, Sargodha, Rajan pur and Muzaffargarh. Medium rainy areas of arid regions and average fertile lands are considered suitable for cultivation of lentil. Furthermore, this crop can also be cultivated on light lands to heavy lands. It is never produced on barren lands. Cultivation of lentil in irrigated areas is very profitable. All accessories for lentil are readily available in these areas and 10 to 12 maunds of production can be easily obtained. It is also recommended to cultivate lentil in cultivated sugarcane of September and orchards. Lentil should be cultivated in first fortnight of September sugarcane.
